A Squirrel Story: Handmade Ornaments with Heart

Some of my favorite projects are the ones that carry a story. The kind that warms you from the inside out every time you look at them. This year, as the holidays approach, I made something a little extra special for my son and his girlfriend: personalized squirrel ornaments and a matching Thanksgiving sign inspired by an unlikely little friend that stole their hearts over the summer.

It all began when a baby squirrel started visiting my son and his girlfriend in her backyard. Over time, this curious little creature grew brave enough to climb onto their shoulders, playfully tug at their clothes, and follow them around like part of the family. What started as a simple summer surprise turned into a sweet bond and before long, my son was completely squirrel-obsessed. 🐿️💛

So when it came time to start crafting for the holidays, I knew exactly what theme to choose.

Each ornament features two cozy squirrels sharing a tiny Christmas tree, finished with rustic twine and a black-and-white gingham bow. The perfect mix of woodland charm and farmhouse warmth. I personalized each one with their names to make them extra special.

And because the story began in the warmth of summer and carried into fall, I also made a coordinating Thanksgiving sign.  A little reminder of friendship, gratitude, and simple joys (like making friends with a squirrel).

Sometimes, inspiration comes from the most unexpected places, like a tiny creature who reminds us to slow down, connect, and find magic in the everyday.
