We have a new baby!
There hasn’t been a new baby in the house since 2017 when we got our German Shepherd puppy.
Jett came to us through my niece, who unexpectedly ended up fostering a mama cat and her litter of 10 kittens. Well actually 2 litters of 5 kittens each. One litter belonging to the mama and one litter that didn’t. But that’s a story for another time. When I saw them, I immediately fell in love. There was just something about this little guy that stuck with me. I had already been thinking for a while that I’d love to add another cat to our family, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to do it, like he was meant to be part of our home all along.
We already have a full crew here: a German Shepherd and two resident cats who have their own established routines, favorite spots, and opinions about everything. So adding a tiny new baby into the mix wasn’t something I wanted to rush or leave to chance. I wanted Jett to feel safe and I also wanted everyone else in the house to adjust slowly and calmly.
One of the first things I set up was a portable indoor pet playpen, and it has been one of the best decisions I made for this transition.
We’re using it as Jett’s little “safe zone” at night and whenever I can’t supervise closely. Even though our dog is very cat-friendly and already getting along surprisingly well with Jett, I still want to make sure there are no issues when everyone is sleeping.
So, the playpen gives me peace of mind for a couple of important reasons:
- We have a large German Shepherd who, while gentle, is still a big dog with big energy
- Jett is tiny and still learning boundaries
- Our home has stairs with open railings, and I’m not ready for unsupervised kitten parkour just yet
So for now, the playpen acts like a cozy little starter apartment for him while he learns the house rules at his own pace.
The specific portable pet playpen I chose has exceeded my expectations. It’s the perfect size for a kitten. Small enough to feel cozy and secure, but roomy enough that he doesn’t feel confined.
Inside, I can comfortably fit:
- A small pet bed
- A compact kitten litter box without crowding the space
What really sold me on it, though, is how practical it is for real-life pet parenting:
- It sets up in minutes (no tools, no frustration)
- It’s lightweight and easy to move from room to room
- It folds completely flat when not in use
- It even comes with a storage bag, which makes it easy to tuck away when we no longer need it
It’s one of those products that just makes life smoother during a stage that can otherwise feel a little hectic.
What I expected to be a slow, careful transition has actually turned into something really sweet. Jett is curious and confident, our other cats are intrigued but calm, and even our dog has become his 24/7 protector.
The playpen has given us structure without isolation. Jett can see and hear everyone, be part of the household rhythm, and still have a protected space that’s just his.
If you’re bringing home a kitten (or even a small puppy or rescue animal adjusting to a new environment), having a secure, flexible space like this is a game changer. It helps with:
- Safe introductions to other pets
- Preventing accidents or risky exploration
- Establishing routines quickly
- Giving you peace of mind when you can’t watch every second
It’s one of those “I didn’t realize how helpful this would be until I had it” kind of items.
If you’re setting up for a new pet or even just want a safe, portable space for travel or temporary containment, this is absolutely worth checking out on Amazon.
Jett’s adventure is just beginning, and so far, it’s been a really sweet reminder that a little preparation goes a long way in helping a new baby feel right at home.
